MISSION

The Peralta Community College District contracts police services with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office. Peralta Police Services is responsible for protecting the life and property of students, employees and visitors. Our mission is to preserve the peace, maintain order and enforce state, federal and local laws. Our goal is to provide a safe environment so that the educational process can be conducted in an orderly and uninterrupted manner. Deputies focus on "partnerships" in addressing the problems and/or concerns identified by campus staff and students.

Deputies and Sheriff's Technicians are assigned to Laney College, Merritt College and College of Alameda during campus hours. Peralta Police Services may be called upon to assist the Berkeley Police Department in reports taken on Peralta's District campus in the city of Berkeley. Police Services is comprised of thirteen sworn Peace Officers and six Sheriff's Technicians who have primary responsibility for law enforcement services on campus and works closely with the local law enforcement jurisdictions. Deputies respond to calls for law enforcement services, take criminal reports, provide the initial investigation of criminal incidents, respond to fire and intrusion alarms, assist in medical emergencies and investigate .on-campus . traffic accidents. Deputies use a variety of measures to patrol campuses, including vehicular, foot and bicycle patrol.

The College campuses employ student Safety Aides that have radio contact with police services and can summon assistance when necessary.

Campus safety begins with you! All crime occurring on campus should be reported to police services. Suspected criminal activity or any emergency can be reported to campus police by:

• dialing 7236 (from campus phones);
• calling police services at 465-3456;
• using one of the "emergency" blue phones and/or pull boxes

Local Police, Fire, or Ambulance can be contacted by dialing
9-911 (from campus phones) or 911 (from public phones)

Crime prevention is the responsibility of all staff and students. Members of the campus community should be aware of their surroundings and of circumstances which seem out of the ordinary. Willingness to look out for each other and to report all suspicious individuals or activities to the campus police will assure that the campus will be a safe, secure place to work and study.

Never leave valuables visible from the outside of your vehicle. Lock your car door after entering or leaving your vehicle. When returning to your vehicle, look around and in it to ensure safe entry. Have your keys in hand to speed your entry. Avoid walking alone, especially during late hours. Use the "buddy system" or request an escort. Use well-lighted paths to and from the parking areas. If walking alone, carry a whistle in your hand. Know the locations of telephones and "emergency" blue phones on campus. Do not leave purses, tote bags, knapsacks, etc., unattended. Lock your bicycle to the bike rack. When working after hours, notify police services of your location. Lock all doors to the area you are in. Lock your office door whenever you leave your office unattended.
