RURAL PATROL AND SUSPECT APPREHENSION TACTICS

DESCRIPTION:  This 40 hour course is designed to familiarize and provide the necessary foundation for rural patrol officers, Marijuana Eradication teams, and tactical team members to operate in remote rural settings. Course content includes, but is not limited to: land navigation via map and compass/GPS, first aid for gunshot trauma, helicopter evacuations, ambush / booby trap recognition, route planning, rifle/sub gun marksmanship skills, hand signals, silent team movement, maximizing chances of apprehending suspects in thick brushy areas, officer involved shootings in remote areas, crime scene management, officer rescue drills, communication limitations, and operation planning and reconnaissance.

REQUIREMENTS:  This course has physical and mental components that will be challenging to students. Attendees must be full-time peace officers. Marijuana Eradication Team members, Fish and Game Wardens, U.S. Forestry law enforcement officers, BLM peace officers, C.A.M.P. personnel, DEA operators, rural area patrol officers, and tactical team members are ideal candidates for this course. Due to the firearms and tactics training that is scheduled, students must be certified with the rifle or sub-gun they will bring to the course. Shotguns are not recommended for this course of instruction. All students who are not members of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office must sign a Release of Liability waiver to participate.

PRESENTATION HOURS:  This is a 40-hour course that begins at 0800 on the first day. There will be one night session during the course that begins at 1300.

CERTIFICATION:  This course is not POST certified at this time.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT:  All participants must have the following weapons and equipment: Agency issued / authorized handgun with 100 rounds of factory ammunition, Agency issued / authorized shoulder fired weapon (patrol rifle or sub-machinegun) with sling and three magazines, 300 rounds of factory ammunition for shoulder fired weapon, load carriage vest or equipment for both weapons, flashlight with red light capability, ear and eye protection, sunscreen, BDU’s / tactical / utility uniform, day / utility back pack, hydration system or canteen, hat, handheld compass, Tecnu soap oil or other poison oak removal agent, hiking / tactical boots, and any other equipment issued by the students’ agency appropriate to rural patrol / eradication missions. A handheld GPS receiver is very desirable.
