SUBMACHINE GUN OPERATOR'S COURSE

DESCRIPTION:  The submachine gun operator's course is structured for patrol and tactical officers. The course will provide each student with the technical and tactical skills necessary for deployment of the submachine gun. Student will gain hands-on experience with the submachine gun and will include the following topics: Nomenclature, breakdown, assembly, load, unload, stoppage, principles of marksmanship, patrol deployment, reloading drills, care and cleaning, low light firing, transition drills, use of cover, close quarter battle, moving/multiple targets, firing on the move, malfunction drills, qualification course of fire, and written test.

INSTRUCTOR:  Deputy Reed has served as a Firearms instructor for over twelve years. He is a certified NRA handgun, shotgun, rifle, submachine gun and long-range rifle instructor. In addition to serving as the Basic Academy Range Coordinator, Deputy Reed also has responsibilities for in-service firearms training, tactical firearms training, reserve police programs, firearms instructor training, FATS simulator training, and other Regional Training Center range programs. Deputy Reed is a member of and serves as the principal firearms instructor for the department's Special Response Unit. Deputy Reed has received extensive firearms training from some of the nations most recognized instructors, and has also competed at national shooting competitions. Deputy Reed currently sits as a member of various P.O.S.T advisory committees.

PREREQUISITES:  Must be a full-time, sworn law enforcement officer or active duty military personnel. All students who are not members of the Alameda County Sheriffs Office must sign a liability waiver.

PRESENTATION HOURS:  This is a 40-hour course that starts at 0800 each day.

CERTIFICATION:  POST Plan IV.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT:  All participants must have the following weapons and equipment: one submachine gun with light mount, a minimum of three submachine gun magazines, sling, 1500 rounds of factory ammunition, handgun and holster with 100 rounds of handgun ammunition, three handgun magazines, wrap-around eye protection, and ear protection. It is recommended that officers bring body armor, flashlight, weapons light, gloves, elbow and kneepads, and "BDU" type uniform.
