PERSONAL

Sheriff Yesenia Sanchez was sworn in as the 23rd Sheriff of Alameda County on January 3, 2023.  She is the first woman and Latina Sheriff in Alameda County.

Sheriff Sanchez started her career with Alameda County Sheriff’s Office in 1997.  She worked hard and excelled through the ranks over the course of her 27 years.

SHERIFF’S OFFICE CAREER 

1997: Joined as a Sheriff’s Technician - Assigned to North County Jail (now the Glenn E. Dyer Detention Facility), in Oakland.

2001: Attended the 117th Academy at the Alameda County Regional Training Center in Dublin.

2002: Served as a sworn peace officer, at Santa Rita Jail, on patrol at AC Transit Police Services, Eden Township Substation, and a detective at Dublin Police Services.

2009: Promoted to Sergeant - First line supervisor at Santa Rita Jail, patrol sergeant at AC Transit Police Services, and detective sergeant at Dublin Police Services.

2013: Promoted to Lieutenant - Served at the Glenn E. Dyer Detention Facility (GEDDF).

2015: Promoted to Captain - Served at GEDDF and later within Support Services, managing Planning and Research, Technology Systems, CALEA, Multimedia and Central Identification Units.

2020: Promoted to Division Commander – Managed the Santa Rita Jail facility in Dublin.

2023: Sworn in as the 23rd Sheriff of Alameda County on January 3, 2023.

 

ACCOMPLISHMENTS/BOARDS

  • Sheriff Sanchez is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Class #272
  • June 2023: Hayward NAACP Youth & College Division 1st Annual Women of the Bay Award
  • February 2024: Member of the CALEA Commission of Accreditation to Law Enforcement Agencies Executive Director Regional Advisor Group
  • May 2024: 2024 Torch Award in Public Safety “Honoring Leaders Carrying Forward the Work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s Beloved Community”
  • September 2024: Graduate of the FBI National Executive Institute (NEI), Class #47

 

SHERIFF’S MISSION

Sheriff Sanchez knows the damaging effects that poverty and lack of access to resources and support systems can have on communities and how that impacts crime and safety. She is committed to her mission to lead the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office with integrity, serve the community through equitable and inclusive practices, build community trust and partnerships, ensure transparency and accountability within the agency, and promote leadership that embodies empathy and compassion.
